Maria van Lieshout is an artist, an illustrator and author, and brings us her first graphic novel, “Song of a Blackbird.” At the heart of the book is Maria’s need – nay, a mission – to educate our young people here in the U.S. — a recent study revealed that in the United States 63% of Millennials and Gen Z did not know 6 million Jews were murdered during WWII, with 1 in 10 respondents indicating that they did not recall ever hearing the word “Holocaust” before. January 27 was the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, an important tie-in with this book. And one other key element of this book is that art has incredible power.
